With 16.5 Percent of Web Sites Now Posing Safety Risks, Traditional security monitoring no longer enough
Cyveillance Launches CyberIntel Source to Track Latest
Internet-Based Threats
ARLINGTON, VA., May 1, 2007 – Cyveillance, the world leader in cyber intelligence, today announced that as part of its regular monitoring and evaluation of more than 100 million unique registered domains, it has identified that more than 11 million sites, or over 16.5 percent of domains associated with a live Web site, pose a threat to visitors. In an effort to arm security professionals with the most up-to-date and accurate information about these risks, Cyveillance is expanding its intelligence-led security services with the launch of CyberIntel Source, a free advisory Web site providing data, reports and analysis on the latest online security threats and trends.
To support these efforts, Cyveillance named Terry Gudaitis, PhD, Cyber Intelligence Director. Dr. Gudaitis will focus on the human psychology and security aspects of malicious Internet threats, further extending Cyveillance’s ability to deliver and interpret real-time, accurate intelligence and forecasting.
In the past few days, the company has monitored more than 100 million second-level domains, verifying that over 66 million of those domains are currently active and of those approximately 11 million, more than 16.5 percent of all active Web site domains worldwide, posed a security risk to their visitors. These risks include malware, privacy (e.g. suspect privacy shield, sites with phishing history), content (e.g. child pornography), behavior (e.g. sites that change browser settings), and transaction (e.g. counterfeit products, fake trust marks). The data shows that that the vast majority of threats, more than 84.5 percent, are delivered by sites with a .com, .net or .org address.
The CyberIntel Source advisory Web site provides access to the most up-to-date information and threat assessments from seasoned Cyveillance security experts, who are dedicated to identifying new online threats and zero day attacks. The site’s intelligence is collected through Cyveillance’s automated Internet monitoring technology. Cyveillance Cyber Intelligence experts, such as Dr. Gudaitis, regularly analyze the information and share their perspectives and opinions about the emerging online threat landscape.
“Today’s security battleground is currently shifting beyond the protection of IT infrastructure and evolving toward the protection of business assets,” said Panos Anastassiadis, CEO of Cyveillance. “The challenge has changed from defending against attacks to knowing about threats before they cause damage. To this end, companies are demanding an intelligence-led approach to security that is enabled by solutions that identify risks early to speed prevention and mitigation.”
In a recent report issued by Cyveillance (“Online Financial Fraud and Identity Theft 2007”), the company identified that the two leading online identity theft risks, phishing and malware, increased significantly in the first two months of 2007. The number of brands attacked grew by 50 percent, while malware attacks grew by an alarming 200 percent. Cyveillance has also retrieved stolen data from more than 3.2 million individuals, including more than 1 million Social Security numbers.
The launch of CyberIntel Source reinforces Cyveillance’s business of delivering the most accurate and comprehensive cyber intelligence in the security industry, focusing on addressing both the human and technology factors behind online risks. With the addition of Dr. Gudaitis as Cyber Intelligence Director, Cyveillance is uniquely positioned to offer its customers the most comprehensive threat assessment solutions from the human element to the resultant technical impact. Dr. Gudaitis and her team will be frequent contributors to CyberIntel Source providing their unique, expert perspective on threats occurring in today’s business ecosystem, enabling customers to more accurately and effectively identify emerging threats before they pose a problem.
