Cyveillance Study Reveals Strong eBusiness Activity Beyond .com, .net, .org, .info and .biz Domains
Robust Activity Within Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) Presents New Opportunities, New Risks
Arlington, Va., March 25, 2003Cyveillance®, a private company and leading provider of 100% Relevant eBusiness Intelligence, today released a new study based on its comprehensive monitoring technology that confirms the widespread adoption of country code top level domains ("ccTLDs," ie, .US, .UK) for eBusiness. As expected, the study found ".com" as the most prevalent domain for eBusiness, but surprisingly, eBusiness activity in ccTLDs as a group exceeded general top level domains (gTLDs) ".net," ".org" and ".info."
While most organizations conducting eBusiness operate with awareness of the more common ".com," ".net," ".org," ".info" and ".biz" domains, significant opportunityand riskare presented by the fact that almost 40% of the Internet's registered domains are beyond this more recognized group of gTLDs.
Overall, the studywhich crawled and extracted attributes of over 40 million registered domains across the Webfound that there are now almost 20 million "live" registered domains on the Internet. Approximately 2.5 million of those live domains contain, in aggregate, a substantial number of pages totaling in the billions, while 1.2 million of those are also equipped to process e-Commerce transactions.
Cyveillance President and CEO Panos Anastassiadis stated that "In most cases, companies neglect ccTLD presence, risking exposure to their firms in the form of potential revenue loss, traffic diversion and uncontrolled distribution channels. Additionally, unseen cybersquatting and redirecting schemes involuntarily expose a company and its customers to fraud and identity theft. Best-practice eBusiness today requires vigilance in monitoring the Internet, far beyond the old days of watching for simple trademark abuse."
